Guidelines: Installing and Customizing
Microsoft Word Templates (Informal Set)
Templates for use with the Rational Unified Process (RUP) are
provided for Microsoft® Word® 97 and 2000.

instructions on how to add customized templates to your Word environment and
work with document fields.

If you already have a folder for your RUP templates, remember its
location in the file system and go to step 4.

Locate your Word 'User Templates' directory by starting Word and selecting
Tools > Options > File Locations. If no folder is specified,
double-click on the User Templates entry to display the Modify
Location
dialog. Create a folder where you want your user templates to reside, and
click OK to make this folder your User Templates home.

From the Windows File Explorer, create a new folder (for example 'RUP Templates')
within the User Templates folder created or identified in step 2.

Open the zip file containing the Rational Unified Process Word templates
(click here and select Open this file...).

Extract the contents of the zip file into the RUP Templates folder you
identified in step 1 or created in step 3. Hint: Check the Use Folder
Names option to avoid having all the template files extracted into the
same file system folder.

When you start Microsoft Word the next time, the New dialog box
in the File menu will include a tab called RUP Templates.

To create a new file from a template, select the RUP Templates tab,
and select the desired template file.

Open Microsoft Word and select File>New, RUP
Templates tab, and the template of your choice.

At the lower right side of the New dialog box, you'll see
the Create New option buttons. If you're creating a new document
using the selected template, click Document. If you're creating a new
template using the selected template, click Template. Select the
desired Rational Unified Process template and click OK.

Under the Summary tab, Replace Project Name, Company Name, and
customize the document title in the displayed fields, as appropriate.

Select OK to close the Properties dialog box.

From the Word menu bar, select View>Header and
Footer.

Scroll through the headers and footers, changing the
document version number and dates in the headers and footers, as appropriate

Select Close to close the Header and Footer
dialog box.

From the Word menu bar, select File>Save As...
to select the appropriate folder location and name for the new Word
file.

Exit from Word and re-open the saved document to view the
updated fields.

If any field is not updated in the displayed document,
right-click on the displayed field name and select Update Field.
