Preparing the development environment for a means turning the underlying development process into an enactable project-specific development process. This involves :

  • defining how the project is going to use the configured development process.
  • developing a development case describing deviations of the underlying process.
  • qualifying artifact selections with timing and formality requirements.
  • preparing project-specific assets, like guidelines and templates, according to the development case.
  • producing a list of candidate tools to use for development.

Preparing the environment for the project is done during the Inception phase. Any subsequent work done to improve and complete the prepared environment is described in Workflow Detail: Prepare Environment for Iteration.

The activities in this workflow detail are best carried out by a small team, staffed by individuals with a good general knowledge of the development process. If the organization has a dedicated process group focusing on process and development environment, the Process Engineer role is often staffed from this group.
